I start out summer with the best of intentions. I have high energy and an excitement for all that we’re going to do.

Once I get into summer my energy to plan things wanes. I get lazy or tired or caught up in trying to do everything that sometimes I do nothing.

To help myself I do two things – fill out a calendar and have things ready for random moments.

Calendar

I sketch out what I hope to do in the summer with a list of activities, camps, games…. and a blank calendar for the whole summer.

I add in all the scheduled items and then add activities that I know we love for each week or each day.

This year I’m going to use Legit Moms Kids Craft for 8 Weeks of Summer and schedule a craft a week to keep out in a place to play and create.

I’ll keep the calendar posted for me and my daughter to use and see all summer. I’m pretty flexible about activities planned, but at least there will be something there to start with.

There is certain to be times when my daughter will shout from the mountaintops, I’M BORED!

So I make her a list of summer activities divided into four categories.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME (no prep)

These are things that are readily available in our house (jump roping, sidewalk chalk, drawing, writing a story)

THINGS TO BUY AND DO

These are things we may not have materials for, but can easily get at the store (cooking projects, art projects)

PLACES TO GO RIGHT NOW

These are easy places we could just pick and go, no planning ahead (parks, shopping mall, small hikes)

PLACES TO PLAN

These are more expensive places to visit or would require a full day (one-day staycation, amusement park)

Hopefully these ideas help you to plan fun things during the day, on the weekend, and for long summer nights.

When my daughter is bored she picks something off the list and can play what’s on it. Or, in all likelihood, she keeps reading until she finds something she wants to do, which is totally fine with me.
